OK, Charlie Rangel screwed up, but only a little. As usual, his fellow Democrats sold one of their own out. I say, review the case and drop it. Charlie is a war hero, he will not go down without a fight. His fellow Dems better watch it because he is going to take some of them down with him.
This all stems from the New York Times muckraking. Petty garbage. Make him pay the hundreds he owes in taxes and get out of the rent stabilized apartment. Fine, big deal. The guy has worked for peanuts as a dedicated public servant all his life, he is not even a millionaire!
“The House ethics committee on July 29 said that Mr. Rangel will stand public trial on 13 counts of violating House rules. The charges involve four areas: Mr. Rangel’s solicitation of contributions to a school to be named in his honor at City College of New York; his errors and omissions on his House financial disclosure forms; his acceptance of rent-stabilized apartments in Harlem, including one for his campaign office; and his failure to report and pay taxes on rental income on a beach villa he owns in the Dominican Republic.
Mr. Rangel had announced in June that he was running for re-election. Even after the panel’s report, he remained popular in his district, where many supporters fiercely insisted that he should be elected one more time and allowed to leave on his own terms.”
